Antichrist

Some thoughts on Antichrist:

-I haven’t read much comments from other people, but I heared some people were so offended by the images that they walked away. I don’t want to throw myself in the debate whether or not Antichrist is allowed to be called art, so I won’t discuss this any further.
-Although Antichrist could shock a lot of people in 2009, somewhat thesame shocking graphics were depicted in L’empire des sens back in 1976. Both films contain genital mutilation, a women’s fear of being left alone by her husband and violent sexual content. This means Antichrist fails to be original on that point.
-The cinematography was beautiful, and some of the scenes in the film are visual poetry in my opinion.
-Kudos to Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg, who blew me away with their daring aproach to the characters and the story.
-Why this film was made is a riddle to me. I have to be honest and say that I couldn’t figure out all the symbolics in the film and therefore probably missed the clue or the message of the film. Other than the clue or message that I maybe have missed I can’t think of a good reason to make this film. Nonetheless I think it’s a work of art just like L’empire des sens, and I thought it was an interesting film to watch, but not a whole lot more. It wasn’t that shocking because it’s not original and beside from the great acting performances and beautiful images the film doesn’t give you a new experience (which I thought the film would give considering the amount of attention it has recieved).

I’ve been comparing Antichrist with L’empire des sens, but aside from some of the graphic content the films do not look alike.
